Gamelan Angklung

Gamelan Tunas Mekar is privileged to have I Made Lasmawan in residence since 1991. Pak Lasmawan is one of the foremost contemporary Balinese composers. Kreteg Layang (Bridge Fly) was composed when Pak Lasmawan first came to the United States. It refers both to the super highways he encountered in Southern California when first arriving in the States (flying bridges), and to the airplanes that brought him from Bali to the United States, bridging the two cultures.

Gong Semaradana

Gamelan Tunas Mekar performed this version of Liar Samas (100 Liar) on April 3, 2007 at the King Center in Denver, Colorado. Written by I Wayan Lotring, Liar Samas speaks to the incalculable wealth of art, dance and music to a culture.

Gender Wayang, Catur Eka Santi

Translated as "Four Becoming One in Peace," Catur Eka Santi plays the music traditionally used to accompany Balinese wayang kulit (shadow puppet plays). Enjoy the exquisite sounds of the gender wayang orchestra in this piece performed at the King Center in Denver, April 2007. With I Made Lasmawan on voice.

Gamelan Angklung

Panyembrama (welcome dance) MP3. From Gamelan Tunas Mekar's first CD.

"PANYEMBRAMA (a female welcome dance) was composed in the 1970's by one of Bali's foremost composers, I Wayan Berata. This modern dance piece is often used to welcome audiences to a program. It was originally written for the dynamic gong kebyar orchestra ("to burst into flame"); here it is adapted for the gamelan angklung by Pak Lasmawan. Although the tuning system of the gamelan angklung (four tone "selendro" gamelan without semitones) is clearly distinct from the gamelan gong kebyar (five tone "pelog" gamelan with semitones), compositions are frequently transferred between these two orchestras. When a gamelan angklung performs gamelan gong kebyar repertoire, the orchestra and its style are called "angklung kebyar." Notice the wide dyamic range, the changing tempi, and the sharp rhythmic breaks (angsel) in this piece..." –Excerpt from the liner notes by David Harnish
