Sketches of Bali: A Celebration of Indonesian Music, Dance & Art

Concert Hall
Denver School of the Arts
7111 Montview Blvd (near Quebec), Denver, CO 80220
7:30pm

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of Bali, Indonesia. Gamelan Tunas Mekar presents a full concert of new and traditional music and dance of Bali. In the background will be their new set, designed, built and hand-painted by Balinese artist I Made Sumayasa. It is a true work of art and a rare treasure in the United States, and is the latest artistic contribution to the Colorado community from a Balinese artist.

Since 1992, the orchestra’s Artist-in-Residence, I Made Lasmawan, has been the inspiration behind its programs, and this concert is yet another example of works premiering by Gamelan Tunas Mekar under his dynamic direction. Dongkang Menek Biyu and the dance piece Taman Sari will be performed on the gamelan angklung orchestra, and the beautiful Sekar Gendot will be performed on the exotic semaradana orchestra. The program is rounded out with other traditional semar pegulingan pieces, including the winsome Jauk Manis dance and the famous Legong Kraton dance. Featuring Balinese dancers Ni Ketut Marni, Ni Nyoman Erawati, Luh Made Didik Dwi Wahyuni and I Putu Tangkas Adi Mayena.

Sponsored in part by the Indonesian Consulate General of Los Angeles and the University of Denver Lamont School of Music.

Prior to the concert, the lobby will be transformed into an Indonesian Market. Browse the booths for Indonesian wares and listen to Javanese Gamelan performing live.
